My Discovery of Dartmouth Beauty and New Painting Inspiration.
Last fall I was commissioned by different people to do paintings of Lake Banook in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
The first one was a gift for a hockey lover from Ontario who grew up in Dartmouth and rowed at the Banook Canoe Club and “To the Finish” was for the retiring coach of Mic Mac AAC Masters.
I love painting places that people connect to and recognize. It makes me happy when my paintings evoke joyful memories. Lake Banook was one of those places. It is a perfect place to paint all my favourite subjects: from winter outdoor activities to beautiful summer and fall scenery. This past August I took a few trips to Dartmouth in the sunrise and sunset. The place was absolutely stunning. I couldn’t wait to get back in my studio!
As a result of this trip I have done two new paintings so far (now available at The Dart Gallery) but more are coming!
Matted prints and blank greeting cards with images of my Dartmouth paintings (and more) are also available at The Dart Gallery.
I really appreciate the interest and support the people of Dartmouth and Halifax have shown to my work. It gives me encouragement and also an inspiration to continue exploring this subject matter.
17th annual Mosaic for Mental Health is opening on October 15th at the Craig gallery at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth. I always enjoy painting the 6X6 tiles and donating the artwork for a good cause. The event itself is really nicely organized and fun to attend. There will be hundreds of 6X6 tiles ( for sale for $25 each and in the silent auction) painted by professional and amateur artists of all ages. Proceeds from the Mosaic support the social programs of CMHA Halifax-Dartmouth for adults living with mental illnesses.
My two tiles for the Mosaic are Dartmouth inspired. Since the event is held in Dartmouth I thought it would be nice to paint something from around the town. I chose beautiful Park Ave in spring bloom and early morning on the Banook lake.
